HARNESSING THE POWER OF AUTOMATION: OUR EVOLUTION OF A TECH STACK BUILT FOR THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION

August 13, 2024

Our company has rapidly expanded our tech stack and focus on automation over the past 5 years. Through consistent research, testing, and vendor customizations, we’ve developed a tech stack that has propelled our operation into the future of transportation. We wanted to shed some light on our strategic approach to integrating automation and the subsequent benefits that it brings to our customers.

Intentional Approach to Technology Integration

Our journey toward becoming a tech-enabled operation was not by chance. It was a deliberate and strategic move. We spent significant time engaging with different vendors, attending conferences, and analyzing market trends to understand what was working and what wasn't. This proactive approach allowed us to build a robust tech stack, combining the best-in-class technologies tailored to our needs, and the needs of our customers.

Partnering with Parade for Seamless Carrier Engagement

One of the standout examples of our strategic partnerships is our collaboration with Parade. Years before onboarding Parade, our EVP, Jordan Reber, recognized the potential of their product. Parade's ability to facilitate digital engagement with carriers was a game-changer. Integrating Parade with our TMS platform (Tai TMS) created a seamless experience for users, improving carrier quality and consistency for our customers.

The Role of Automation in Enhancing Efficiency

Without automating tech processes, achieving high adoption rates is challenging for any company. For instance, we use Zapier to integrate various tech vendors, streamlining operations and ensuring efficient workflows. These streamlined workflows show immediate value to our reps, which leads to a faster company wide adoption. A notable example of this is the integration of the Highway platform for carrier vetting. By automating the vetting process, we have reduced the time required from 30-45 minutes to just 5-6 minutes per check, allowing comprehensive fraud prevention and ensuring every load undergoes stringent checks.

Safety and Compliance: A Technological Advantage

Safety is paramount for our company & our customers, and technology plays a crucial role in maintaining high safety standards. The use of platforms like Highway and Motive enables us to conduct thorough safety checks and monitor driver behavior effectively. Automation allows for quick, consistent, and less invasive checks, ensuring that only the safest carriers are part of the network. This level of tech automation provides our customers with the peace of mind that their goods are transported safely & reliably.

Customer Benefits: Enhanced Service and Visibility

The integration of automation and advanced technology directly translates into tangible benefits for our customers. By optimizing carrier engagement, enhancing safety protocols, and streamlining operations, we deliver a higher level of service because of it. Customers experience fewer instances of fraud and safety issues, thanks to the rigorous vetting and monitoring processes. Additionally, the efficiency gained through automation means faster, more reliable service from our reps, ensuring that customer shipments are handled with the utmost care and precision.

Looking Ahead: Embracing Future Innovations

As we continue to innovate and stay on top of the evolving landscape of the transportation technology industry. The integration of technology is not just about current efficiency but also about preparing for future advancements. Our commitment to working closely with vendors, providing feedback, and being part of the development process ensures that we remain at the forefront of industry innovations.

We pride ourselves on being a transportation provider that delivers not just freight, but reliability, resilience, and unwavering commitment—especially when it matters most. That commitment was put to the test in the wake of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton , two devastating storms that left a trail of destruction across the southeastern United States. In recognition of our efforts, ARL Network has been honored with the Recognition of Excellence Award for our vital role in hurricane relief support, working alongside Ardmore Logistics to assist Duke Energy in the rapid restoration of power to millions of people. Hurricane Helene & Hurricane Milton: A Critical Need for Transportation Support to Restore Power Grids On September 26, 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 storm, unleashing 140 mph winds and leaving catastrophic flooding, widespread power outages, and significant infrastructure damage across Florida and the Carolinas. Just two weeks later, Hurricane Milton struck near Siesta Key, Florida, bringing 120 mph winds and compounding the devastation with additional flooding and power loss. Among the hardest-hit areas were Duke Energy’s electric distribution circuits , where thousands of utility poles were broken, substations were destroyed, and millions of customers were left without power . The road to recovery required a massive, coordinated logistics effort to transport critical materials and equipment where they were needed most—and fast. ARL Network’s Role in Rapid Power Restoration In the midst of this crisis, ARL Network mobilized our expertise and resources to safely transport essential materials from manufacturing and storage facilities to staging sites and distribution centers , ensuring that restoration crews had what they needed to rebuild and reconnect power as quickly as possible. Thanks to this joint effort between ARL Network, Ardmore Logistics, and Duke Energy , the results were nothing short of remarkable: ✅ Power was restored to nearly all affected customers just 10 days after Hurricane Helene— even in the most devastated areas. ✅ 99% of customers affected by Hurricane Milton had power restored within 7 days. This level of efficiency in back-to-back hurricane recovery efforts is a testament to the power of strategic logistics, rapid response, and collaboration . Honored to Make a Difference Receiving the Recognition of Excellence Award for our relief efforts is an honor, but the real reward was being able to make a difference when it was needed most. Our work in disaster relief logistics is about more than just moving freight—it’s about helping communities recover, supporting first responders, and ensuring that critical infrastructure is restored as quickly as possible. We extend our gratitude to Ardmore Logistics for their partnership, to Duke Energy for their trust in our ability to deliver, and to our entire ARL Network team for their hard work and dedication. Prepared for the Next Challenge Natural disasters are unpredictable, but our commitment to reliability, safety, and efficiency remains constant. Whether it’s emergency response, power restoration, or delivering critical materials under extreme conditions, ARL Network is ready to rise to the challenge—no matter what comes next.

Document forgery in cargo theft is an emerging and growing problem, with significant increases in incidents and the value of stolen goods. The logistics and transportation industry faces a new level of sophisticated crime, leading to potential financial and operational challenges. Key states have seen substantial increases in thefts, with targeted goods ranging from small appliances to copper. The industry must adapt to these changes and develop strategies to combat this evolving threat. Here are the key things you need to know. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Emergence of Document Forgery: Document forgery has become a significant crime in cargo theft, according to Keith Lewis of CargoNet. Rising Cargo Thefts: The first quarter of 2024 saw an unusually high number of cargo thefts. We have not experienced this at ARL, but we are getting in front of the matter to ensure we don't fall victim to the activity. ‍ Key Statistics: Increase in Incidents: 46% year-over-year increase to 925 incidents. 10% increase from the fourth quarter of 2023. Value of Stolen Goods: $154.6 million worth of goods stolen. ‍ How They Do It - Document Forgery Explained: Criminals impersonate professional drivers to fraudulently secure loads. They partially unload the cargo at the destination. Bills of lading are altered to show the entire load was delivered. This method is easier to commit and evade detection. ‍ Industry Impact and Concerns: Increasing crime rates in the wrong direction. Potential cost burden on the industry. Insurance companies may soon push back due to rising claims. ‍ Regional Data - States with Significant Increases: California: 72% year-over-year increase. Illinois: 126% increase. Texas: 22% increase. Targeted Goods: Small appliances, liquor, energy drinks, and copper. ‍ Understanding the Criminal Rings: More people involved in cargo theft post-pandemic. Shift from smaller domestic rings to sophisticated international operations. Larger and more structured operations. Call centers as big as targeted freight brokers. Increased difficulty in tracking stolen loads. Expert Insights: Scott Cornell of Travelers: Cargo thefts have evolved in sophistication over the past four to five years. Organized cargo theft rings now operate with higher sophistication levels. Danny Ramon of Overhaul: Pre-pandemic, Q1 was typically a slow period for cargo thefts. Post-pandemic, theft activity continues into the new year without the usual slowdown. ‍ Frank Matarazzo of Fusion Transport: 2023 saw unprecedented levels of cargo theft attempts. Organized and strategic impersonations of legitimate carriers have increased. Rising number of bad actors with slim chances of being caught.
